Interview with Carolina Barillas, female solo traveler

I first met Carolina two years ago while shopping for products at the Phoenician Resort and Spa. Because I LOVE the products she introduced me to, I go back on a regular cadence and love every conversation she and I share, especially when it comes to solo travel!

Q: Remember meeting for the first time in the spa boutique at the Phoenician?

It was about two years ago and you were about to embark on your first solo trip!

If you could travel back to that exact moment, what was the overwhelming feeling?

Was it pure excitement? Total terror? Or that odd yet thrilling mix of both?

A: I remember I was a little bit concerned about the idea of traveling by myself but, I was more excited.  I think Mexico City was the perfect choice as it is pretty easy to travel, close to home and I had an idea in mind of where I wanted to stay.

I was watching a movie and the location, “La Condesa” where the movie was filmed made an impact on me, so I knew that’s where I wanted to stay. I also knew there were things I wanted to do like; take a hot air hot balloon flight in Teotihuacán, go to the Museum of Frida Kahlo “Casa Azul” in Coyoacán, and visit The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Walking around in the beautiful streets of Mexico City and eating the best street tacos ever, made my solo trip comfortable and fun. I didn’t worry about not meeting someone else’s budget. Nor did I feel pressure to do things like shopping when that is not how I choose to spend my days.

Q: I clearly remember thinking Mexico City being a bold and vibrant choice!

What made you decide to go solo?

A: I love traveling! I found that most often I visit family or a friend, so I am not completely alone.  Sometimes it is hard to combine schedules, tastes, budgets so I decided to do it alone.  And that movie location in Mexico City, stuck with me and was calling my name!

Q: Thee is a dynamic shift that happens the moment you return from taking the leap to travel solo! What did you learn from your travels to Mexico City that empowered you and gave you the confidence to travel across the globe to Asia?

A: Going solo teaches you how capable you are. You realize you can do everything you want, which then teaches you you can also do that in life.

For me, spending some time alone allows me to listen to myself so I can clearly understand the things I choose to do and the places I want to go. In this world full of noise, spending some time alone helps me to protect my energy, tune into myself and focus on the positive.

I learned that making my own decisions, spending my own money, and being completely responsible for myself in a different Country makes me feel free and independent. It all just makes me want to do it again…

Q: What inspiration and tips from your trips would you share with women who fear going solo?

A: It is a good way to learn about yourself, to get to know you, to listen to yourself, to take care of yourself, to challenge yourself, to escape reality, to explore the world, and to enjoy life!

I would say facing the fear of traveling, if it is something you always wanted to do, (or facing whatever challenges in life you want to do), say yes to yourself. Take the chance and do it. Just listen to yourself and trust your intuition.

Q: Do you have any essential go-to products that are now essential to your travel?

A: The less I have, the better. I just need a good pair of shoes, comfy clothes and a good moisturizer (and sunblock) to keep my skin hydrated.

Q:  If you can wrap your newfound wisdom up in one sentence, what would it be?

A: Don’t wait for others to take the chance, life is too short to live in one place.

Final question: Is there anything else you want to share with our readers?

A: I know it is hard to step out of your comfort zone, but for me the idea of doing what really makes you happy is totally worth it.

One of the most recent things Carolina said to me when leaving our conversation at the Phoenician was, “Every time I talk to you, I feel inspired to keep traveling.”

It is my sincere hope that Carolina inspired YOU. Afterall, Carolina is like most of us. She is the stripped back version of social media. She is not responsible for content or growing a following. She is just a curious person who loves to travel.

I know many of you resonate with Carolina, and would like some support in moving through your fear(s) of solo travel. I am honoring anyone who feels inspired to schedule a Coaching session with me with 20% off my normal price!
