It’s funny… I have yet in my life to be drawn to the ever-most-popular places in Europe like Italy and France. In fact, I have only been to London on my way over to Africa. Fortunately I had a nine-hour layover when I landed at Heathrow Airport. As the sun came up, I got on a tube, and experienced everything from tea to fish and chips!
Because I don’t have the desire to travel Europe like I feel everyone else in the world does, I often consider myself different. I find myself most drawn to the Mesoamerican region, meaning Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica.
On February 15th, I attended the Travel and Adventure Show in Phoenix. Not only did the panel of expert travelers attest to the fact that Nicaragua is one of their most surprising and favorite places to travel, I also met David Torres with Latin Travel Collection (LTC).
Upon meeting David and his sister Anahi, who have been in this family-run business for 35 years, I got EXCITED about expanding my desires to travel to places such as Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Galapagos, Peru and Ecuador!
David and Anahi are the type of people you meet in life that instantly make you feel like you are already friends! They share an inviting and beautiful sibling smile as well as a LOVE for what they do! I have no doubt their personalized service to these intriguing places are designed to deliver authentic and transformative experiences.
Let’s get to know David and what he loves about tailoring these experiences, while being mindful of sustainable travel and the care for the environment, local culture, and economies.
David, bring us back 35 years. How did your family start LTC?
The company started back in 1989, founded by my parents. My dad was a mountaineer and met my mother climbing a fantastic mountain called Alpamayo in Peru. After initially disliking each other, they eventually came to date and soon after their passion for the outdoors became their profession as they began taking people around the Andes, the Amazon and then to Galapagos. Soon after, they started receiving guests at their home, which eventually became our first hotel in Quito. Over the years the business grew out of a passion for nature, the environment, the local cultures and of course the love of travel.
What continues to make LTC special for you?
Today, LTC represents quality, personalized service, and boutique travel experiences, with a strong focus on environmental and local economic sustainability. Our partners must have the same values and care for the environment, and our guides and staff understand that a trip can be a lifetime experience. We have also handpicked our local providers and have a locally owned first approach to business that makes our trips memorable.
What do you find special about each country LTC travels to?
South America is the most diverse continent in the world, and each one of our destinations is a world on its own. There are tons of amazing landscapes, cultural expressions, museums, tastes, foods and sounds, that even as a local, I'm always getting surprised. We want travelers to get a small taste of all of these wonders of nature, to get immersed in the flavors, and to feel the rhythm of life that exists only in South America. Every country we operate in has always left me pleasantly surprised, and years of happy guests agree!
Can you give us an idea of what a tailored travel experience could look like?
A Tailored travel experience begins with one of our travel designers exploring the travel style that each guest has. Depending on timeframes, interests and past travel experiences, we can create the ideal journey, combining adventure, culture, nature, cruising, gastronomy, birdwatching, you name it! Within LTC we have a segment called "special interest tours" where we focus on delivering trips around local festivities, gastronomy focused journeys, birdwatching, herpetology, and much more. It is also easy for us to organize different group sizes, if you are looking for a trip for family or friends, your book club, your gym buddies, etc.
How does LTC accommodate the female, solo traveler?
For female solo travelers, we can provide two options on our scheduled fixed departure journeys:
Sharing a twin bedroom with another single female client that's part of the group.
offering a single supplement price for a single room.
What else would you like us to know about yourself and LTC?
Today LTC is still 100% family owned and operated, we are also proud of having a diverse and engaged team of experts. Personally, I am a guide myself and love to share the world of travel with anyone interested in exploring South America. I am fond of diving and apnea, climbing and mountaineering, and of course music and dancing!
I don't know about the rest of you who are reading this, but I do know that I am SO READY to join David, Anahi, and the people THEY TRUST to share their passion and knowledge and take me on a trip of a lifetime!!!
